The Weeping Alaskan Cedar: A Unique and Beautiful Addition to Your Garden

When it comes to unique and beautiful additions to your garden, few plants can rival the weeping Alaskan cedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis 'Pendula'). This striking evergreen tree is native to Alaska and Oregon, but its popularity has spread far beyond its natural range. In recent years, it has become a sought-after addition to gardens in the Northeast, where its distinctive shape and adaptability make it a standout.

Two of these trees currently grow in my garden, including one that was given to me as a 40th birthday present by my garden mentor.

Interestingly, the weeping Alaskan cedar has recently been reclassified into a new genus called Xanthocyparis. However, I'm an old dog who's reluctant to learn new tricks – I still refer to it as Chamaecyparis nootkatensis 'Pendula.'

As with any plant, the key to success is proper care and attention. In warmer climates, be sure to provide relief from mid-day summer sun and keep the soil consistently moist. But for me, these plants have been largely carefree, requiring only occasional watering and pruning.
